Gimme a break. I'd love to know how the movie studios had better CGI effects then than they do now.
Even looking at the footage now, I highly doubt it was faked.
It happened. It was a waste of money, going there and then doing absolutely nothing with it; no moon bases, no trips to Mars, but it happened. Deal with it.
