GeoCities

Just found out that the venerable old GeoCities is closing. Oh. Excuse Me. That would be "YAHOO Geocities."

Anybody remember the real GeoCities? They were around in the mid '90s, and anyone with a connection could make their own web page. There were thousands of GeoCities pages around back then. I had my own little corner of the web where I posted my goings-on and pictures of the kids, etc.

As with anything good on the Internet, GeoCities was eventually bought out, by Yay-hoo in this case, and, as is the case with most Internet buy-outs, was made totally unrecognizable, which caused all the loyal users to bail out, which caused the corporate folks to abandon it. Granted, the company was starting to get stupid before the buyout, inserting ads in the pages and using that stupid floating logo that they had for a while, but it was nothing compared to when Yahoo got a hold of it.

No matter. An Internet institution is gone, and the only way you'll be able to experience it will be via the Wayback Machine.

I shed a tear today, remembering when the Web was actually FUN.
